Hi friends. It's been an unbearably long time, and I do apologize. So, let's update you on the goings-on of the McShane clan.
First things first, we moved into our new apartment in July. It was madness. It's still kinda madness, but the painters are finally coming next week and then I'll finally be able to finish up all the unpacking. It's amazing how much that's affected things. Anyway, here's a quick look at us setting up our main room, and I'll show a pic of how it all turned out in the end when the painters are done.
So, it's set up kinda like this now, but with a larger table and less debris. And James is probably still on the computer, but as you probably noticed, he does move around a bit.
So yeah, love the new apartment. Onto smaller and smellier things! We got another wee pup!
Her name is Sansa, and she has the same dad as Lady. They're the same breed, but their coloration is different (obviously). This is a picture of her taking a bath. Much like Lady, she is quite sad in the bath.
Here she is asleep on my leg at the vet. She's much more dog-like than Lady. Lady is a small, fur-covered child/human who just looks like a dog. Sansa is definitely a dog. Lady has no idea how to handle it.
See? totally freaked out. haha. Lady remains ever a weirdo, like owner, like dog, I guess.
Here's them sitting together normally on the couch/loveseat dealy. They actually get along quite well. I mean, of course Lady is shocked and alarmed whenever Sansa does something dog-like, and yes, Sansa is also a little bit of a bully, but we're working with her and it's getting better. Sansa is a biter, so that's a fun thing to learn to train her out of. She also has the world's tiniest bladder, so even though I let her out every hour and a half or so during the day, she usually still smells strongly of urine and regret. It's a real treat. But she's a really nice pup so enduring the smell is a cross I can easily bear.
New topic! I just got the ap called "Snapchat" on my ipad. It's so fun! It comes on non-apple products, too, so that's really fun. You send people you're friends with pics, but they only last for about 10 seconds. So you can send hair ideas or weird faces or whatever you want, but the pics don't save to your hard drive unless you save them on purpose, so it feels more carefree. Plus it's fun. Here are some examples of that kind of fun I'm talking about:
I'm a weird snap-chatter, but it's fun, and I love it, so...that's nice. my screen name is "liciemac" if you want to snapchat with me.
Ok, so here's a pic of the four of us:
Yay. Home and happy. Ok, well, I hope everyone has a wonderful day, and I'm going to try to get back to blogging more regularly, so...that's fun...
Alright, bye.

Driving Miss Lady
So Lady is a wonderful dog. We love her very much, and usually she's pretty well behaved. The exception is when we're about to go on a trip. Every time we start bringing bags out to the car, she goes completely nuts. Every. Single. Time. And, of course, it makes no sense. We never leave her behind, she's always taken care of wherever we go, and we always bring her back home at he end.
Now, that's where I'm starting to worry about our wee pup. She keeps seeing more and more things go into boxes, and pretty soon, the whole apartment will be ready to go. We're completely packing up Saturday morning. What is going to go through her mind for the rest of the day we'll spend in our empty apartment?
She's already started moping around and making terribly desperate looking faces at us. It's happening again, she thinks to herself, they're going to leave me, just like they almost did all those times before. She sits in her kennel voluntarily and stares at us, sometimes whining or whimpering. We take her out, but that doesn't calm her down. She has food, water, a soft, clean bed, and she's well groomed. This misery is self-inflicted.
See? She travels well in the car.
And I know she'll eventually get in the car and calm down/fall asleep, but the big unknown is, what's going to happen when we get to our new apartment? And at what point will she realize, or will she realize, that this is her new home? This might be really strange for her.
She's just so stressed out right now. And no amount of petting and comforting is doing any good. So basically, she's a weird dog, and this next week should be pretty interesting.

An Unexpected Topic
Hi friends. Wow, so it's been a really long time since I've blogged about anything. You might be thinking that I have a ton of life updates, crafts, and d.i.y. type things to update you on, and you are absolutely correct. However, I'm going to put all that off yet again and talk about something I've recently become re-obsessive about:
Harry Potter.
Yes, that's right, and anyone who follows me on Pinterest has probably noticed the slew of Harry Potter-related pins I've been pinning, but friends, you don't know the half of it. I have a secret pin board for when I think I've obsessed to much. Yes, it's overflow pins for when I can't and won't stop. And for make-up tutorials that I'm embarrassed to admit to. So here's all my thoughts on Harry Potter, and I'm sorry for those who don't/won't read it (it=HP). Not sorry that I'm going on about it, but more so, sorry that you're missing out on such a fantastic journey.
Ok, so when Harry Potter first came out I had just entered Middle School and half the moms thought it was fine to read them and half of the moms thought if we read them then we would join a Wicca cult and dance naked around a fire in the middle of the woods and cast spells on all the God-fearing people who had avoided such evils. It was all very controversial and exciting. My mom let me read them, but reminded me that witchcraft is make-believe and that God is real. Amen, Mama-Trish, for understanding where the line is. In high school, I smuggled HP books to a friend of mine who's mom still wouldn't let him read them. Like I said, very exciting and controversial.
Now of course I became obsessed, went to all the midnight book parties, which for me started at the 4th book when I was 15 or so, and spent long nights after getting the books sitting in black graduation robes with my friend Mags, reading until our eyes closed out of exhaustion and then picking back up as soon as we woke back up. It was marvelous. I sincerely, at one point, believed myself to be in love with Harry Potter, but then, after re-reading and some careful reconsideration, decided I was actually in love with Ron Weasley. (mind you, this was before the whole Ron-Hermione thing, we're talking pre-book 5 here...and ok, there was some of that in earlier books...but I justified it...)
As an adult when the last book came out, I had given up my girlish crushes and instead yearned to see redemption in my favorite character since book 1: Severus Snape. I knew, I just knew he couldn't really be bad and that there had to be an explanation. Otherwise, if he really did fool Dumbledore after all these years, than Dumbledore couldn't really be the amazing man he was. Plus, what author would spend that much time convincing us of something that was already kinda obvious unless it was a twist in the story? And then chapter 33 happened and I wept and read it twice through and felt that finally everything had been reconciled in my life. Of course, I was in a quite tired state, which lent itself to more than the necessary amount of weeping. I was quite a mess, actually.
Anyway, I used to find myself re-reading the books once a year, but after book seven, it's been once every two years or so, give or take 6 months. It's been a long while since I've re-read them, and the yearning in my heart, it grows. I purposefully didn't pack up my Harry Potter books with the rest of my books because I had already started feeling a pull towards them. I've decided to start reading them once I get to MN, just so I'm actually helpful during the move.
So, if I don't blog about all the things I ought blog about in the next couple weeks, blame JK Rowling. She did this to me, and I'll never stop being glad that she did.

My Dream Come True Birthday
Ok friends, so here's the situation, I just got the best birthday present ever. Remember the Napsack by Poler? From this post? Well, some awesome friends of mine (Kathryn and Kristin Elliott, Katie Maslow, Karen Coleman, Anne Varevice, Anna Hagens, and Cara Vermett) pooled their money and got me one for my birthday! This post is a month late because James realized I'd need a longer size when he got it in the mail, and had to go through the whole exchange process. I got it in the mail yesterday. And except for when I went to work, I haven't taken it off. Comfiest sleep ever, by the way. So here's a pictorial guide of the Napsack's finest features.
Ok, so on both sides, there's a side zipper, making it easy to switch from sleeveless sleeping bag to normal sleeping bag with ease.
You just upzip it annddd.........
Ta-Da! Arms! Easy, and fun!
The bottom is normally left open, but there's a drawstring in case you want to close it up and sleep and or hop about like you'd do in a normal sleeping bag.
Oh no! It's miserably cold! Oh! But I have a hood, and it has these nice little tie things.
Ta-Da! Warmth! Look how warm it can be. Eh? Eh?
Also, the front zipper goes down a log ways, making it easy to climb in and out, and, as my friend Dan pointed out on twitter, it's reversible!
A couple of other fun facts about the Napsack:
It is a little difficult to frolic in. Apparently the process of trying is "not as good looking as it probably feels" to quote my husband (the guy behind the camera).
So, yeah, he's right. It looks downright uncomfortable, but it felt awesome, so I really don't care.
Here's me trying to jump. So, very useful for a lot of things, just not always very elegant looking.
But come on, it's so cozy. I slept in it last night. It was amazing. I'm bringing it to the women's retreat, and for all you out there who will be at said retreat, I will be wearing the Napsack. Probably not to talks or meals, but definitely in my free time and in and around my cabin. So much comfort!
Last pic. So happy. So yes, a special thanks to all my girls who allowed my birthday wish to come true. I am so excited and I hope someday everyone can feel the excitement of the Napsack.

Fun With Avocados
Ok, so avocados are in season right now so they are super cheap, and that's awesome because they are delicious and so good for you. Here's some of the fun stuff I've done with avocados so far:
1. Black Beans and Avocados: Ok, so I don't have a picture of this one because it doesn't photograph well, but it is delicious. First: cook a chopped onion and some garlic (pressed) in a little olive oil. add a can of rinsed black beans. take off heat and set aside to let cool. Take an avocado (or two if you want the ratio to be more avocado than bean) and cut it into small cubes. Add to mixture with sime finely chopped cilantro and you have yourself a party. Put it in a wrap, serve with tortilla chips, or just eat it straight up. I got this recipe from myself, in that I made it up.
2. Avocado with cottage cheese and bacon:
Do I really need to explain how to make this? Cut an avocado in half, take out the pit, add cottage cheese, sprinkle bacon on top. I got this recipe from my friend Jack. Such a good combo.
3. Avocado Chicken:
Cook 2 or 3 chicken breasts. let cool. cut up an 1/2 onion, finely chop some cilantro, cube 2 avocados and squeeze some lime juice all into the same bowl. Add chicken. Stir. I think I found this recipe online, but I probably changed some stuff. OH, and add some sea salt. That's almost always a good call.
Ok, happy cooking!

Easter 2013: South Bend Edition
Well friends, I'm very late on my blog post about. Lucky for me, none of you expected it on time. Okay, so here's Easter with the McShanes:
First things first: Mary Kate can fit in Lady's kennel. I find this rather impressive. James can't and I can a little, but she is full-on in there. That's amazing.
Ok, so Friday night when we got into town, James had his fantasy baseball draft, so I hung out with Martee, MK, and Sarah. James was in the same room, but not 100% there. We had snackies. It was nice.
Lunch on Saturday this happened. Isn't that nice? James is learning the guitar and wanted to show his hot new skills to Kevin, who already has skills. I want to frame this and hang it above the hearth. I like it that much.
Here's James, Kevin, James' dad, Martee, Mary Kate, and Sarah having dinner on Easter Vigil. Here's a question: Why is it called Easter Vigil and Christmas Eve? Why not Christmas Vigil and Easter Eve? These are the things I wonder about when I'm trying to fall asleep.
Here's me and James on Easter morning in our Easter clothes. I was going to say "in our Easter bonnets", but of course, James made us take our splendid Easter bonnets off for this picture. Something about not wanting the internet to know how much we as a couple love wearing bonnets on holidays. I can't remember the full reason. Anyway...moving on...
Here's the girls on the couch with their Easter baskets/bags. Sarah's roommate joined us for Easter breakfast.
Here's the organization of the Easter picture that I don't actually have a copy of. I'm sure it looks great. I just like this picture, so I wanted to include it.
The mass we went to on Easter was surprisingly somber. I mean, they technically picked "Easter" type songs to sing, but I was totally unconvinced that the music ministry really actually was happy that Christ is risen. It felt like they kind of regretted having to celebrate. But we saw a lot of friends and we sat with family, so it was still a nice mass.
We also got to play some croquet with Joe and Sarah, the betrothed couple we are friends with. I had an early lead, but I ended up coming in dead last in the end, which just means James and I need to practice playing lots of yard games before we go head to head with those two again. They came in first and second. But yeah, other than getting owned in croquet, we had a really nice time and drank some delicious beers. Fun was had by all.
We also got to have breakfast at some friends' house, and that was made even more exciting because James is going to be the godfather of their new wee babe! That's right, James is Marlon Brando. It's awesome. So that's exciting.
Ok, I promise to blog sooner next time, ok? ok. Bye!

Smells
Hi friends. So last Friday I was walking to work and I smelt some crazy smells. Yes, that's right, this blog post is actually about smelling things. Ok, so first I'm walking around, looking at houses that I think look nice, minding my own sweet business and all of a sudden, I smell something.
This is what I look like when I'm smelling things. Anyway, all of a sudden, in the middle of a residential neighborhood, it smells just like this shipping area I used to bike through on my way to the trucking company I worked for some time back in 2007. Now, that place smells like tons of cardboard because they're shipping things all over the place, so of course there's a plethora of cardboard. So anyhow, this smell lasts for about 2 blocks and then it's gone. So that was weird. I mean, it's not like there should be tons-o-cardboard there. But oh well, it's gone.
But then, in another 3 or so blocks, it starts smelling like older lady perfume from the early 1990s, which also makes no sense at all, because of course the area I was walking couldn't be that full of older ladies of the early 1990s without me seeing them all grouped around together. And of course I know this particular smell from being around in the early 1990s and from my constant thrift store shopping. And that's what gets me thinking this next thought: Why do all thrift stores smell like that? Let's take this to a new paragraph.
Why do all thrift stores have that same smell? Is that the smell of all thrift stores' soaps and employees, or is that thriftish smell the culmination of all human smells. I mean, sometimes you get something with a specific perfume or odor, but usually, it's just that one kinda "oh, someone's worn this, I should wash it before I do, or at least tell people I did" smell. It's just interesting to me that EVERY thrift store seems to smell the same way. I can only assume that that's what people as a whole smell like if we all put our smells into a big pot and just stirred it around a little.
Ok, that's really all I wanted to talk about. Bye!
